What's JJ listening to (other than himself speaking in 3rd person...)?
Snagged a few good items on my last trip to Aron's and Amoeba. Picked up:
* Molam: Thai Country Groove From Isan -- Really cool compilation of some wild Thai styled pop/folk/rock. Some of this is very reminiscent of Dengue Fever, but other tunes are definitely like nothing I've heard before. You either dig this stuff or you don't. I do. Marisol does not. YMMV.
*Beginner's Guide Guide to Bollywood -- Ok, this was a stab in the dark for me since I know pretty much nothin about Indian music other than the Doob Doob o' Rama CD I picked up at Sound Exchange eons ago and the $1.99 tapes that my friend Katie and I used to pick up at the grocery store across the street from Raja's House of Sweets. It's a 3 CD set that so far, is pretty damn sweet. The first CD, "Vintage Bollywood", is pretty much what you'd expect. The second one, "Funky Bollywood", was a pleasant surprise. It's basically a cool fusion of Indian music and 70's cop soundtracks. Crazy guitar stuff in there. Sadly, I haven't gotten around to checking out the third CD, "Modern Bollywood".
As far as the radio goes, been listening to a whole lotta Norteno. I'm becoming especially fond of the whole soooper drunk, screaming singer guy fronting a jacked up polka band sound that 105.5 FM pumps out over the airwaves here in LA. It's rad!! Marisol really hates this stuff. It's like the Anti-Salsa or something. Too bad. When I hear accordions and tubas, I get pretty excited. One of these days, I'd have to play in one of these bands...
